Student Support & Enrichment
At Schechter Bergen we are devoted to providing developmentally appropriate, yet challenging and meaningful learning experiences that will serve to meet the needs of each of our students. Our learning specialists use multiple support structures to provide individualized and small group support and enrichment to a range of learners. Learning specialists collaborate with teachers to enrich, differentiate, and remove barriers for student tasks, projects, assignments, and assessments. We are proud to be able to support a wide range of learners with varying needs and abilities.
Learn More About Student Support & Enrichment
Early Childhood
Starting in Gan 3s, teachers create developmentally appropriate classroom environments that foster independence and age appropriate support in order for each student to reach milestones at their own pace. Students are observed carefully as they transition into the school year each fall. Using a variety of techniques, teachers encourage the development of social and early literacy and numeracy skills. Beginning in kindergarten, learning specialists collaborate with teachers to provide targeted instruction in the area of literacy as needed.
1-4 Kehillot
Our 1-4 Kehillot use a collaborative team teaching structure that we call "The Kehillah Model." In this model, Learning Specialists are integral parts of each teaching team. Students learn in a variety of small targeted groups throughout the day in order to engage with learning experiences that are tailored to their needs. In this way, students receive appropriate instruction that both supports and challenges them appropriately.
5-8 Kehillot
Learning specialists in the 5-8 Kehillot support students by providing instruction that includes the explicit teaching of specific learning strategies, pre-teaching and reviewing, reading and writing support for both English and Hebrew, organizational support, managing deadlines, executive functioning skills and more. Learning specialists partner with content teachers to identify students who benefit from academic enrichment and support. Students engage in small group instruction with learning specialists in their content classes and in the Learning Lab. With a focus on individual growth and reflection, students work towards their own goals in small supportive groups.
For students in grades K-8, we partner with Bergen County Special Services to provide additional services as needed.
